Charlie blinked three times. When his older brother asked him to have lunch at The Leaky Cauldron, nothing could have prepared him for what Bill wanted to say. He hadn’t seen anyone in their flat for a while now— be it witch or muggle— but he thought it was just Bill taking a break from the dating scene. He wasn’t expecting the answer to be because he was starting to fall in love with you. 

He grimaced as he plainly spoke his mind. “Bill, she probably sees you as a kid.”

“It’s only ten years, barely, considering my birthday is well before hers. She’s not even close to Mum and Dad’s age. They didn’t even cross paths at Hogwarts once.” 

Charlie sighed. “I didn’t mean it like that. I meant look at you, no offense. Y/N’s been through so much. She probably wants to settle down right away and put anything exciting behind her. Do you really think you can give her boring and stable?”

You were roaming through the Dark Forest, much to the Marauders’ horror. They weren’t exactly sure if you were still safe there now that your father was in prison. You didn’t care and walked into the woods anyway. The Dark Forest had fresh ingredients for potions. You had started staying at Hogwarts more and more, trying to get yourself more comfortable with being around students and teaching. It seemed very likely that you would take the teaching job next year. But for now, your classroom was a very large workshop. 

You had lost all your old journals— the Ministry unfortunately burning them. But they felt guilty enough to buy you a small pensieve where you were trying to peek through memories to see what the pages were and copy them down. They wanted your work. You were going to be a paid researcher. That’s what the extra money in your vault was— that and some money from James and Sirius that they eventually fessed up to putting there. According to them, it was so you wouldn’t have to ask for money and feel awkward about it. 

Plants were carefully plucked and put in your little foraging bag. Growling caught your attention, along with a lot of shouts. Having no sense of preservation, you walked towards the sounds. You walked through some trees to see Aurors slapping cuffs on Fenrir Greyback and putting him in a full body bind. He was one of the few supporters that had escaped the initial arrest and were on the run. Your gasp caught everyone’s attention. Moody pushed everyone back when you started shaking.

The memories ended shortly after showing your brief freedom before you were taken to St. Barney’s. Slowly, you pulled your hand out of the pensieve. Your hand moved to scratch at the Dark Mark on your other arm. Amelia Bones pulled up multiple folders. 

“I would like to call in all Aurors with shifts at Azkaban during the years Y/N Riddle was there. I would also like to motion the Ministry for an internal investigation regarding the misconduct of her first case. And Ms. Riddle?”

Your scratching stopped and your gaze moved from the floor to Amelia. She looked at you with eyes full of pity— it wasn’t missed on anyone how your leg wouldn’t stop bouncing the entire time or the hand outside the pensieve that hadn’t stopped shaking since you sat down.

You stayed outside until your face felt frozen. Gently folding up the blanket, you walked back inside. Your room was the same as last time and your classroom looked as sterile as ever. You didn’t really know what you were supposed to be doing. House arrest came with no instructions. You figured you could work on all your potions research. There wasn’t really anything else you could do. You moved all your work from your room to your classroom to have proper separation. Every now and then people walked past your classroom to get to where they needed to go. 

They couldn’t help but stare at what you were doing. It started with you cleaning everything. Then you ripped all the curtains from the windows. You went to organize your journals on a shelf. And then sloshed several buckets of water into the classroom to clean the windows… the part you could reach. Even with your wand, you weren’t sure if the dementor effects had worn off. 

Wingdarium Leviosa was a spell you could do but you didn’t feel confident in it. Pausing your window cleaning, you moved to scratch a tally into the wood by the window. A knock on the threshold of the classroom door made you turn. Remus scratched the back of his head.

You woke up in the morning with a big stretch, wincing as you heard all your bones pop and crack. Drawing open the curtains, you looked straight into the dark cloak of a dementor outside your window. You squeezed your eyes shut and turned your head. They were only on the campus grounds, frightening all the children, because of you. You scratched a tally on the wall and went to your bathroom to change. 

It was kind of exciting having a private bathroom. Your room wasn’t in your classroom office like some of the other professors who stayed at the castle during the week. The Ministry wanted you high up and in a place with lots of windows— a fancier prison cell. But you had a bathtub. And you loved that bathtub. Well, you would love that bathtub. You need bubbles and bathing salts and things that could be gotten at Diagon Alley. But you weren’t allowed to leave the castle without an escort. 

The Ministry finally responded to your letter and you were to meet Auror Moody outside. He had a new nickname? Mad-Eye Moody. You were curious about how that happened. It didn’t matter much. You were glad he was the one escorting you. Out of uniform, Moody was potentially the only Auror you weren’t as scared of.
