a/n: I know I’ve been really inactive lately (life’s actually been going well so I’ve been busier but that leaves me less time to write unfortunately), but I’m still lurking here! This is a fic I wrote several months ago but finally got around to editing it. Hope you enjoy!

Bucky wasn’t sure how you managed it – the punch to his gut every time you walked in the room. You were dressed in your tactical suit; black fabric draped over every inch of your body, protective layers of Kevlar and technology beyond Bucky’s years, a weapon strapped to your thigh and knives hidden in your belt and at your ankle. Your hair was tugged out of place, sweat beaded on your temple from the sparring match in the gym moments before the two of you were called to service. In your right hand, you carried your combat boots, the laces hanging low enough to touch the ground.  

And still, Bucky held his breath as you approached. Stomach in knots, chest tightening until his heart threatened to stop entirely.

“My offer is fifty this time,” you announced, winking in his direction before you turned to head for the landing bay. “Take it or leave it, Barnes.”

Bucky held your hand the entire journey back to camp.

Which was good, because the closer you got, the heavier your feet became from all the dread rifling through your body. If Bucky noticed the fact that he was basically pulling you along, he didn’t say anything.

Not until you reached the Bog, and as the door inside the massive tree creaked open, he turned to you, hands moving to cradle your face.

“It’s going to be fine,” he insisted, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead. “You’re family, sweetheart, and everyone in that camp loves you.”

You raised a brow. “Everyone?”

Instead of rolling his eyes - as he always did - Bucky just stared at you, a calm sea of cerulean gazing at you.

Screams ripped through your ears, an endless sound of weeping and wailing; cries pulled from people in the rooms next to yours caused by a type of unending, unyielding suffering that you were now all-to familiar with.

It was impossible to sleep, because the screams wouldn’t stop. The only form of rest was when they had poked and prodded one too many times, and your body was too exhausted to fight any longer. The last thing you would see were his eyes and his satisfied grin knowing that he had broken you for the day as the world slowly faded to black-

A hand on your arm caused your whole body to jump, pulling you from another nightmare as your eyes opened, wide and panicked.

Bucky was looking at you the same, and you caught a flash of concern before he returned to his default scowl. He was crouched over you.

“Is everything okay?” you asked, breathless from the sudden switch from one nightmare to the next. 

His jaw clenched. “You were getting too loud,” he murmured, then stood up. “We should get going anyway. Sun’s comin’ up.”

It was raining.

Somewhere, deep in the back of your mind, a flash of a memory brought you back to the days when you could sit by an open window, inhaling the smells from outside made that much sweeter by the rain. The pine scent from the evergreens that surrounded your home was sharper, the aromas from the flower garden just below you wafted upwards, making your bedroom smell like lilacs.

If you were lucky, your mom would have made hot chocolate, walking it over to you and sitting beside you within the alcove in your room, the two of you watching the rain in silence, allowing the sounds of droplets create a symphony with the different surfaces it fell upon.
