The color blue is the most rarely occurring pigment on our planet. These blue Morpho butterflies do not have a single pigment of blue in their wings.

The microscopic structures of their wings filter out all light except blue. This is called diffraction. Random fact but a group of butterflies are called a kaleidoscope.
