much like their mediocre taste in women, i think this is another point that frey and reyes form some kind of love-hate bond over. they are both inextricably enmeshed in imperial bullshit against their wishes but frey is just like. thogg don't caare. and it drives reyes mad with envy and righteous anger
even though this twine is nominally about frey, i haven't had to develop the manufactory or the nine deeps / forge worlds very much. which is a shame, because I feel like they have the potential to be really fun, especially as an emerging center of dissent for the Empire.
that's also something I want to play with later. as fun and sexy as it is to think of lasting societal change as a result of a singular event with a clear cause and a few charismatic actors, that's rarely how it happens. the empire /is/ going to be in a series of situations due to the actions of like 6 or 7 guys of all time. but what comes out the other end is catastrophic collapse alongside business as usual alongside the kind of mediocre, incremental change of a system adapting to a weird new normal. the banal dominance of the empire is funny but I think this is arguably a funnier state for them. internally splintered and strong-armed into adapting to a dynamic universe, but not, like, gone. you idiots have always been trapped in here with the rest of us 🤝
on the reverse, i like being optimistic about change but i also like when the emerging system is messy. the messiness is the point. what kind of systems are uniquely positioned to suffer an empire and come out on the other side stronger. and what are their unique weaknesses that become exposed in that power vacuum.
and basically all of that is to say i want to see what happens when the manufactory unionizes. i think they and the endling cult are fun to think about in their funnie insular collectivism, the engine of both strength and vulnerability for them. and then frey as a product of that, and someone who was catastrophically failed by both the Empire and her coworkers.

rotating frey and the oracle of caeres in my brain. i dont have anything to say about them that's new, im just thinking so hard about them.
only thing better than having new guys to rotate in your brain is throwing them at all of your other guys like enrichment in the tiger enclosure. I think that everyone thought Markus Severinus and the Oracle of Caeres were besties, but they were merely tolerating each other. Markus respects a fellow king who has some kind of gender that's too powerful for the archive to excommunicate. But he never believed in a deterministic universe and he's not about to start. Did the oracle know what was coming for markle? did he try to warn him ? did their relationship suffer because mark perceived his warnings as manipulative and dangerous . don't worry about it.
Reyes generally likes Frey and believes her beliefs, but she Does think that she has dogshit taste in women, which she doesn't respect.
