Ok it's been a few years now so I think it's safe to say that I'll never get over "He's come to get me, and everything's ok." in For Forever in the Dear Evan Hansen musical. Because that's not what happened. Evan broke his arm after his suicide attempt and he was alone in that forest and nobody came to get him. He was alone. But there's this moment, the way that song is sung, where he believes and Connor's family believes, and even I am briefly convinced that maybe that wasn't the situation. And then the actors voice cracks or the chorus starts up again and Evan and I are both reminded that this is just a lie. A lie that was meant to comfort Connor's family and is now also comforting Evan, and isn't that really the story of the show itself? We want to desperately to believe these pretty lies, believe that we aren't alone, and then the song ends and the truth comes out and we are shocked back to reality.
