Drift was an Autobot for 0.00005% of the war

Returning to this post to say that according to the IDW continuity timeline, Drift left the Decepticons and was Neutral for 10,396 years before becoming an Autobot. Also, Drift never underwent the Rite of the Autobrand - instead his apparently-revokable status as an Autobot is directly tied to the vaguely named “Reintegration Act”, of which he is the sole benefactor. Which is to say he probably cut a deal with the Autobots and whether or not he is actually an Autobot is debatable.

Said this once and I’ll say it again: the fact that Drift, someone who still believes in the original Cause of Decepticonism, could have the fortitude to join the side he’d considered an enemy so long, fight against people he still cared about, beneath a “reclaimed” symbol that represented the system that had caused him and so many others to suffer, carrying out the orders of a leader who he still loathes and who was the source of so much strife and pain for himself and others from the Dead End, all because he was able to recognize and accept that the Cause he’d fought so hard and long for was dead and gone and that the war needed to end? The sheer amount of personal strength and resignation that requires? Damn.

Commenting on what inspired him to create Drift/Deadlock, writer/creator Shane McCarthy said that “I wanted a character in AHM that had a particular element to him that I didn’t see readily available elsewhere and secondly because, frankly, I thought it would be a great idea for Hasbro to have an Autobot Drift racer.” He later said he wanted to show what’d happen if a former Decepticon became an Autobot Drift’s Japanese overtones are meant to be a tip of the hat “to the country that gave birth to Transformers.”
