Listen I can't make zutara canon but I have a vision for a dreamer & pacifist (male) firebender who wants to study waterbending techniques to become a healer and a rough and violent (female) waterbender who cut her hair like a boy--keeping the loops because I like them--because she wanted to be taught offensive movements after spending her childhood forced to learn only healing to make up for my fire-water needs.
In my mind the guy's older brother died in the war (he was forced to enlist in the Fire Nation army and tried to make the best of it by choosing to focus on distributing food & medicines but ended up caught in the crossfire) & he couldn't save him, he had been too young enlist but then decided to desert & try to become a healer. He's an artist and a poet and probably plays some instrument yadda yadda. She is an only child from a very conservative family and honestly just wants to be taken seriously--she probably left her tribe to see the world when she was old enough. The war ended when they're in their twenties I think, both far from home, they met in some refugee camp or so. She taught him healing (I'm pretty sure a firebender can control the body's temperature and help with fevers, sooth muscles, cauterise wounds, etc), he taught her offensive manoeuvres (control & focus her anger, combine her fluid movements with stern and strong hits). He sings and she hates it. He forges a metal necklace for her, she carves a bone top-knot ring for him.
